The scheme was delivered safely, on programme, and achieved first-time approval from Hertfordshire County Council.

Works Involved
• Implemented extensive traffic management, including two-way temporary traffic signals and a signed pedestrian diversion.
• Excavated and cut the existing grass verge to formation level.
• Installed a foul drainage manhole and associated drainage beneath the temporary access.
• Installed utility ducting to accommodate future service connections.
• Replaced existing non-illuminated highway signage.
• Full depth carriageway and footway construction, including tactile crossing point.

Site Challenges
Working on a busy B-road serving Barkway required careful planning to maintain the safe movement of both vehicles and pedestrians throughout the works. A signed footway diversion was implemented to provide a safe working environment, particularly during surfacing operations when pedestrian movements required close management. A continuous site presence ensured the diversion remained safe, clearly signed, and accessible at all times.
During excavation, the existing carriageway construction was found to differ from the original design assumptions. Vista worked closely with Hertfordshire County Council to develop an alternative tie-in detail. This collaborative approach avoided unnecessary excavation, minimised disruption, reduced programme risk, and enabled the scheme to be completed on time and within budget.
